Silver Jewelry Care

Tarnish in silver jewelry occurs when the metal comes in contact with oxygen and sulfur, elements that are present everywhere. In a practical way, it is impossible to prevent tarnish from forming. With proper care however, this process can be slowed and tarnish can be removed.

There are several ways to remove tarnish, from household practices like toothpaste to more complex ones like chemical dips. We won’t talk about these because we believe that preemptive care is the way to go.

We recommend

  • All ArgentDreams.com silver jewelry comes with a cloth bag. In order to reduce exposure to external factors like air or humidity while not being worn, we recommend keeping your AD jewelry in its bag and in a dry, dark place. Additionally, anti-tarnish strips may be inserted in the bags as an extra measure.

  • jewelry polishing cloth Preemptive care. Don’t wait until tarnish becomes too obvious to begin worrying about it. Use a polishing cloth to clean your silver jewelry. It is practical and fast. Try to do this periodically to prevent the formation of thick layers of tarnish that may be difficult to remove later.

  • Don’t wear gemstone jewelry while taking a shower, swimming or doing any activity that involves getting the jewel wet because the water will loosen the gems (eventually, this is inevitable in some cases, however water will accelerate this process).

  • The gemstones used in AD jewelry fall under the category of porous gems. Don’t use cleaning solutions on the gems (they can be used on the silver part of the jewel but not on the gem itself).

  • If you are not going to wear your silver jewelry often, put anti-tarnish strips inside its bag. As contradictory as this may sound, tarnish forms faster when jewelry is not being worn. The skin oils prevent the metal from coming into contact with the elements that cause tarnish (unless you are under medication that changes the acidity of your skin). The anti-tarnish strips will absorb the oxidation elements.
