Tarnish in silver jewelry occurs when the metal comes in contact with oxygen and sulfur, elements that are present everywhere. In a practical way, it is impossible to prevent tarnish from forming. With proper care however, this process can be slowed and tarnish can be removed.

There are several ways to remove tarnish, from household practices like toothpaste to more complex ones like chemical dips. We won’t talk about these because we believe that preemptive care is the way to go.

Preemptive care. Don’t wait until tarnish becomes too obvious to begin worrying about it. Use a polishing cloth to clean your silver jewelry. It is practical and fast. Try to do this periodically to prevent the formation of thick layers of tarnish that may be difficult to remove later.

Don’t wear gemstone jewelry while taking a shower, swimming or doing any activity that involves getting the jewel wet because the water will loosen the gems (eventually, this is inevitable in some cases, however water will accelerate this process).
